Dining out or eating in? Either way, there are plenty of places to find food and drink in and around the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean that will ensure you’re well fed and watered. This is a small selection.
The driving times given here are optimal, and don’t take into account traffic, occasional road works or road closures or any of other perils of driving.
Dining Out
The George, St Briavels
11 mins on foot (less back, as it’s downhill). 2 mins by car.
This is St Briavels’ village local…and it’s good! Wadworth’s beer. Wide range of wines and other drinks. Tasty food, including a good selection of fresh seafood. Worth ringing in advance to book a table, even in quiet periods (if only to check food is being served).

The Whitebrook
10 mins by car.
Not far out of sight across the Wye Valley from Treetops, this is the nearest Michelin starred (and Michelin green starred) restaurant. Serious food, “celebrating what can be grown, foraged & produced in the Wye Valley & its borders”. Eclectic wine list, including – but by no means limited to – a selection of Welsh and English wines. At the time of writing (February 2026) open for dinner Thursday-Sunday 7:00-8:30pm and Lunch Friday-Sunday 12:00-1:30pm.

The Royal George, Tintern
13 mins by car.
Reopened in August 2025 after a two year renovation, The Times was enthusisatic about this Wye Valley hotel in a review dated 5 February 2026:
With two restaurants, a café and an outdoor pizzeria, there’s more than enough variety to fill a weekend. The Lower Deck restaurant occupies the main pub area, with a log fire at its centre. On the short menu is a range of pub classics, from gorgeously crispy fish and chips to beef lasagne prettily presented in a Staub pan.
But it’s the more grown-up Upper Deck that really shines. The focus is on meat (and some fish), sourced from local producers, expertly aged and flame-cooked for all to see through the oak-framed kitchen pass. The Monmouthshire pork cutlet brims with unexpected flavours and textures, while the fish of the day may be succulent monkfish in a walnut romesco sauce. The waiters are fun, energetic and into their wine.
Outdoor pizzeria closed in the winter months.

Verderers’ and The Orangery at The Speech House Hotel
17 mins by car.
Verderers’ at The Speech House Hotel, a former 17th-century hunting lodge, advertises itself as a fine dining restaurant – and it is. Set in the (still used) courthouse for the Forest of Dean Verderers, the surroundings catch the attention and the restaurant is, in their own words:
Offering you an imaginative fine dining menu which our talented Kitchen team change seasonally. The dishes are prepared with fresh, and as far as possible, locally sourced ingredients.
The Orangery is less formal. It describes itself as somwhere for a relaxed lunch or a light supper.
Restaurant hours: check online or by phone.

Severn & Wye Smokery (Restaurant)
32 mins by car.
The restaurant at The Severn & Wye Smokery is open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays and lunch Tuesdays to Saturdays. Well worth a visit despite these limited hours. Focusing on food from their own smokery (there’s a clue in the name), and their fish market and deli, they are a classy and imaginative operation; who would have thought that hot-smoked salmon would be a great basis for a Caesar salad? Restaurant hours:
- Tuesday-Saturday 12:00-2:30pm
- Friday-Saturday 5:00-9:00pm

Eating In

Need ingredients? Here’s where to go: local shops, a cracking deli and eight convenience stores and supermarkets less than 20 mins away.
The Pantry, St Briavels
11 mins on foot, 2 mins by car. (Opposite The George.)
A wonderful local resource, The Pantry is a community shop, run by a Community Benefit Society, which means that all profits go back into the shop, and any extra goes to community projects. A good range of groceries, locally sourced where possible, is complemented by a remarkably good deli counter with local cheeses and meats. Usual opening hours:
- Monday-Friday 8.30 – 5.00
- Saturdays and Bank Holidays 10.00 – 1.00
- Sundays closed.

Brockweir Village Shop & Café
10 mins by car.
Another good local resource. Also a not-for-profit, community owned and run business. Stocks a wide variety of both essential and speciality foods and household goods and local produce. And has a café, which provides a congenial hub and community meeting point with both an inside and outside seating area which overlook the Wye Valley. Usual opening hours (for shop):
- Monday-Saturday 9:00-6:00 (lunch 12:00-14:30)
- Sunday 10:00-4:oo (lunch 12:00-14:30).

Severn & Wye Smokery (Shop)
32 mins by car.
A foodie’s delight: a fabulous fish market, food hall and deli. Set in a stylishly refurbished old stone barn, the Smokery is a joy to visit. High quality stuff: fresh and smoked fish galore, other ready-to-eat dishes (not all fishy!), a great selection of cheeses and other dairy products (staples include Smart’s Double and Single Gloucester cheeses and Netherend butter – the one that says on the wrapper “The richest dairy pastures lie betwixt the Severn and the Wye“), and lots of other things you didn’t realise you wanted but are reluctant to leave without.
